How to Prepare for Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment

July 14, 2025

Whether you’re getting a filling, dental implants, or an extraction, sedation can make the experience far more comfortable. No stress, no tension—just you, your dentist, and a treatment plan that doesn’t make your shoulders creep up to your ears.

But even though sedation dentistry in Virginia Beach can ease nerves during the appointment, knowing what to do before and after matters just as much, from what to wear to who should drive you home.

Step 1: Know What Type of Sedation You’re Getting

Before anything else, it helps to understand what kind of sedation your dentist will be using.

There are a few common options:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): A light form of sedation that wears off quickly.
  • Oral sedation: A pill taken before your visit to help you relax.
  • IV sedation: A deeper level of sedation delivered through a vein for more complex procedures.

Since each type requires a slightly different approach, be sure to ask your dental team for details. Knowing what to expect helps you feel more prepared and confident going in.

Step 2: Follow Your Dentist’s Pre-Appointment Instructions

Your dentist will provide specific instructions before your visit, so please follow them closely. Depending on the type of sedation, you may need to avoid food or drinks for several hours beforehand.

If you’re taking daily medications, your dental team may ask you to adjust your schedule (with your doctor’s approval). Even your morning coffee may need to wait until after the procedure.

When in doubt, call the office to double-check anything you’re unsure about.

Step 3: Arrange for Transportation and Time Off

Sedation can leave you drowsy, and safety always comes first. Unless you’re only using nitrous oxide, you’ll need someone to drive you home after your appointment. If possible, have them stay with you for a bit after the procedure in case you need help getting settled.

You’ll also want to clear the rest of your day for rest. No meetings, errands, or big plans—your only job after the appointment is to recover.

Step 4: Dress for Comfort and Bring Questions

Wear soft, loose-fitting clothing that makes you feel relaxed. Skip anything restrictive, along with jewelry, heavy makeup, or contact lenses (if possible), especially if you’re having a longer procedure.

If you have any questions or concerns about recovery, side effects, or what to expect, bring them up during your visit. The more informed you are, the more at ease you’ll feel during treatment.

Step 5: Aftercare Starts Before You Arrive

Set yourself up for a smooth recovery by preparing ahead. Stock your fridge with soft foods like soup, smoothies, or yogurt. Have water ready, along with some entertainment and a cozy spot to rest.

And of course, follow any aftercare instructions your dentist provides. They’ll help reduce discomfort and get you back to feeling normal faster.
